Abstract

In this article, we intend, in a brief way, to approach two recurrent aspects in the work of Herbert Helder, the obscurity and the corporeal, analyzing them in his poem Um Deus lisérgico. We would like to point out that the obscure language, worked on by the poet, serves a coherent poetical project: the encounter of the body with the world is, according to Helder’s poetic work, an obscure event. In the same line, the author prioritizes the problematic of the body as a crucial element in his poetry. Descending from the literary tradition that values the role of the body in poetry - since William Blake -, Herberto Helder intends, overall, to contest the Cartesian dualism, which is also Christian, of the ‘mind and body’ that ended up generating, in the literary scope, poetic works that have privileged ‘thought’, forgetting the body as a locus of poetical work.
