Abstract

Relatively unknown to the general reader and still little explored by scholars already familiar with it, the short-story A Hora do Diabo is one of Fernando Pessoa’s most intriguing texts. Due to the profuse references made in the narrative to several topics within the scope of Western esotericism, any attempt to decipher its contents would have to focus largely on its hermetic tone. Nevertheless, this paper intends to propose a different approach, that is, an interpretation of A Hora do Diabo based on Tzvetan Todorov’s theory of the fantastic. In order to do so, a few selected fragments of Pessoa’s short story are going to be examined from the perspective of Todorov’s system with the purpose of verifying to what extent the situations seen in the narrative lead to the reader’s hesitation, which in turn supports the aforementioned theory.
