Abstract

As a sensory experience and stimulus, the gaze plays a mediating role between the subject and the surrounding reality. The apprehension of the external world through the gaze and the inherent flânerie movement is crucial not only to the poetic work of Cesário Verde but also to the orientalism of Wenceslau de Moraes. In this essay we propose to analyse the importance of the aesthetics of the gaze in the literary production of these two Lusophone flâneurs. Although part of distant geocultural spaces, both authors make use of the same visual processes to achieve the aesthetical fruition of those cultural spheres, which they skilfully manipulate as an epistemological instrument and an ethnographic tool.
