Abstract

The text presents hypothesis about the classical roots of today's electronic books. Tracing hypertext and hypermedia back to the rhetoric practiced in ancient Greece and mediaeval oral culture, it offers an intellectual context and a background to understand the rapid changes in the universe of publishing. Today, electronic books replicate the familiar environment of a book for computer screens, though adding new features like dynamic links and sound or video playback.
