Resolution of conflicts of interest and ethical violations

Editors will take the necessary steps to identify and prevent the publication of articles that involve inappropriate research procedures or ethical violations, including plagiarism, falsification or fabrication of data, manipulation of citations, absence of relevant authorizations, or discrimination. Situations and allegations of misconduct reported to the editors and reviewers will be taken to the Editorial Committee, which will decide on the appropriate measures, and, if necessary, will send the case to higher administrative levels of the University.

The journal follows the recommendations of the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE), established in the Best Practice Guidelines for Journal Editors (http://publicationethics.org/resources/guidelines).

Preprints and Data Sharing

The journal encourages the publication of preprints for the dissemination of scientific knowledge.

Some examples of websites that allow authors to publish their papers as preprints can be found at http://repec.org/ and https://preprints.scielo.org.

Regarding sharing research data, SciELO provides a list of specialized repositories classified by area at https://wp.scielo.org/wp-content/uploads/Lista-de-Repositorios-Recomendados_pt.pdf

Ethical principles

The decisions of the Editors and the Editorial Board of Estudos Econômicos cannot be influenced by commercial or pecuniary interests. This journal is firmly committed to the highest academic and ethical standards, publishing corrections, clarifications, retractions and apologies whenever necessary. In case of ethical questions about submitted manuscripts or published articles, the Editors will take the appropriate measures to probe them and, if necessary, will publish corrections or retractions.

The journal tries to ensure the originality of the submitted articles, using modern tools to identify text similarity.

Editors’ Responsibilities

  • Publication decision: Editors must be guided by the journal’s policies about legal requirements on defamation, copyright infringement and plagiarism.
  • Transparency and respect: editors should evaluate submitted manuscripts without discriminating against race, gender, sexual orientation, religious belief, ethnic origin, nationality, ideology or political beliefs of the authors.
  • Confidentiality and editorial responsibility: Editors must deal with manuscripts as confidential documents and commit to preserving the anonymity of authors and reviewers. They can disclose information about the manuscripts only to reviewers and members of the Editorial Board when necessary to make editorial decisions.
  • Conflicts of interest: Editors should report conflicts of interest when evaluating a manuscript, such as the existence of any institutional or friendship relations with the authors, or rivalries that may generate suspicions about the integrity of the evaluation process. In these cases, another editor must take over the assignment.
  • Collaboration in inquiries: Editors must take the necessary measures in case of ethical inquiries about a published or submitted manuscript.

Reviewers’ Responsibilities

  • Confidentiality: Reviewers must keep all information or ideas obtained from reading the manuscripts confidential, and cannot use them for personal or for other people’s benefit. Manuscripts should be taken as confidential documents that cannot be shared or discussed with others.
  • Conflicts of interest: Reviewers should inform the editor if they have any friendship or institutional relations with the author(s), or even rivalries that may raise suspicions about the integrity of the evaluation process. In this case, another reviewer must assume the assignment.
  • Literature review: reviewers should try to identify important works that were not cited by the author(s), as well as similarities of the manuscript with any other article that they have read.

Authors’ Responsibilities

  • Originality and plagiarism: Authors must ensure that the manuscripts are original. Any form of plagiarism will be severely punished.
  • The authorship of the work must be restricted to those who effectively contributed to its conception and development. If the article is accepted for publication, only authors registered at the time of submission will be included. The lead author must guarantee the inclusion of the names of all co-authors who effectively collaborated for the research that resulted in the article. Also, s/he should make sure that all co-authors approve the final version of the manuscript and agree to its submission for publication.
  • Manuscripts that do not present substantive contributions to the literature should be rejected.
  • Authors should properly cite all publications that contributed to the manuscript, explicitly acknowledging the authorship of other authors’ ideas. Such demarcation is an ethical imperative of respect for the ownership of ideas pursued by the journal. Information obtained from conversations, correspondence or discussions should only be used with explicit written permission of the people involved.
  • If the Authors identify errors or inaccuracies after the publication of their manuscript, they must inform the Editors and collaborate on the correction.
  • Given the high number of submissions and the limited availability of potential qualified reviewers to cooperate, the journal has the policy that authors who submit papers should collaborate as reviewers.
