Abstract

In this paper we will present the analytical frames of J. Keith Vincent and Iida Yūko regarding the mediation of desire in works these critics designate as homossocial narratives, by Natsume Sōseki and Mori Ōgai. Both critics make use of the same theoretical assumptions and carry out a reinterpretation of the critical fortune of Meiji-era novelists. After reconstructing their arguments, we will show how, despite similar premises, these critics operate with different views regarding the representation of sexuality and desire in these writers, opening space for debate about the historicization of these elements, as well as their functioning within fictional narratives.
