Abstract

The epic literary genre is very well represented in the West by works of Homer, however, few studies focus on similar works from eastern societies such as China, Korea and Japan; comparative studies between western and eastern epics are also infrequent. This article proposes a comparison between the Japanese work Heike Monogatari and Iliad, a Greek work of Homer, seeking similarities in theme, literary structure, characteristics of the leaders and heroes of each work and the influences they exerted in their respective societies as historiographical sources, as well as their reflections in the cultural heritage.
