Abstract

On the year of 2013, between February and May, musicians that usually play choro in the quare of the general Glicerio Street in Laranjeiras, Rio de Janeiro, initiated one public petition to raname the place as Pixinguinha Square - Pixinguinha was one of the most famous Chorinho musicians of Brazil. A group of inhabitants of the place disliked the proposition. This article aim to investigate throws the discussions between musicians and inhabitants how different forms of political and cultural appropriation occur in the city of Rio de Janeiro.
