Between the global and local: a reflection on anglicisms in the lexicon of sustainable fashion

This article adresses the lexicon into the scope of sustainable fashion, with special attention to the presence - or absence - of anglicisms. It is known that fashion has a very productive lexical field and that there is a strong presence of foreign words in the lexicon of this discourse, mainly anglicisms, and gallicisms, as we can see in the works of Farias (2016) and Orsi and Formigoni (2014), for example. Sustainable fashion is, in turn, a theme that is born within the field of fashion and is often positioned as a global movement. While it is an interior theme in the field of fashion, it is not a pure specialty theme, given that there are blogs and movements dedicated to publicizing and raising awareness among consumers and citizens about the negative impacts of fashion. It is in this scope that this research is inserted. Our objectives are: (i) to verify if the use of Anglicisms is also expressive in sustainable fashion discourse; and (ii) to reflect on the lexicon studied by discussing the use – or the absence – of foreignness and its contribution to giving the movement the status of globality and inclusiveness, or exclusivity. We could confirm that the sustainable fashion discourse uses English to make it common and global, referring to concepts, practices and ideologies.
