This essay identifies a special archetype in Italian literature and social history: the “Arcitaliano”, a kind of “hyperitalian”, as a figure of exaggeration and excess, being part of the debate around the national character of Italian people. The author labels Ser Ciappelletto (the main character of the first novella in Boccaccio’s Decameron) as a typical “arcitaliano” because of his outlandish and scandalous behavior both morally and otherwise, within the framework of two main groups in late Middle Ages and early capitalism: the business community and the religious communityDownloads
