This study aimed to investigate possible violent acts suffered by children and adolescents through lesions caused by burns. In order to do so, children and adolescents ranging from 0 to 19years old who were hospitalised in a unit for burned people at hospital HGE - state of Bahia - in the period between Dec. 2001 and Feb. 2002 constituted the target population. Data collection
was carried out by means of structured interviews with victims and their guardians, forms containing data collected from the patients’ files, and the observation of the relationship between
victim and guardian. The analysis of the quantitative data was done using the EXCEL computer program and the qualitative data were analysed through the content analysis technique. The
comparison of the data about burns with possible violent acts revealed 11 5% of physical violence, 48.0% of negligence, followed by 40.4% of accidents. The conclusion of this piece of research is that health professionals should be trained with the aim of identifying the lesions that reveal violent acts. This study offers subsidies for violence prevention programs, and it can be considered a source of reference for studies on this topic.
