This article discusses the idea of life in the French “pre-revolutionary” moment, questioning how the modes of interpretation of the phenomena manifested by living organisms can contribute to the dialectical construction of the concept of living being in contemporaneity. In this approach, we present the work L`Homme-Machine (La Mettrie, 1748), characterizing its historical contributions to the construction of materialist/mechanistic (non-reductionist) explanatory modes related to living beings.
