The Latin Method of du Marsais

César Chesneau du Marsais (1676-1756), the grammarian entrusted by Diderot and D’Alambert with the drafting of the grammatical terms of the Encyclopedie, published in 1722 a Méthode Latine, where he proposes the teaching of Latin and of any foreign language following the principles used by the Enlightened to explain the generation of language. That Such idea caused a polemic between Du Marsais and his followers, on the one hand, in one hand, and between to the those ones opposite opponents to the new method, on the other hand. We ́ve got very interesting documents concerning the critiques originated emerged by Du Marsais ́ proposal proposition about both upon une méthode raisonnée pour apprendre la langue latine, and about the apologetic answers given by Du Marsais during his life, or by the publishers of the edition of his complete works.
