Abstract

This text is an effort to frame an institutional history of the International Institute for the Portuguese Language (IILP), an agency of the Community of Portuguese Language Countries (CPLP). It organizes the history of the institute in four stages: 1. Design (1989-99), 2. Installation (2000-05), 3. Consolidation (2006-10) and 4. Expansion (2011 to now). It analyzes its operation, accomplishments and limitations in promoting the Portuguese language as pluricentric, as well as its most recent projects
