This article discusses the complexity underlying the study, in Brazilian schools, of constructions with direct transitive verbs combined with the particle “if”. To this end, the start point is the results of a sociolinguistic survey conducted in academic texts produced by the publishers of UFRRJ. The research is based on the Theory of Variation and Change (WEINREICH, LABOV, HERZOG, 1968), aiming at analyzing the behavior of such variable constructions in contexts of indeterminacy of the subject, in order to show that the difficulty of the student in understanding them is the fact that the grammatical tradition considers them as passive, but actually they are active forms with the feature [+arbitrary reference], varying with the 1st person of plural.Downloads
