The Representation of Sibilants in Eighteeth Century Brazilian Manuscripts

In this article, aiming to increase the knowledge about the linguistic situation of the portuguese in documents produced in Brazil and thus making a concrete contribution to the studies on the History of the Portuguese Language, presented the results of a study on the representation of deaf and noise sibilants in manuscripts of the colonial administration in public circulation in Brazil. The corpus is composed of Brazilians manuscripts, written in the captaincy of São Paulo, between 1701 and 1800. The paper presents a written graphic peculiarities that had not based on a model could be the result of a shared knowledge of graphic procedures, transmitted in several ways, by means of which different typologies and scribes can be grouped in a sort of “graphic tradition” of notarial documents of the colonial administration.Downloads
