Abstract

From a critical perspective and based on the contemporary discussions on the promotion of languages in multilingual contexts, I will discuss the development and expansion of the policies of promotion, projection and diffusion of the Portuguese language in the world, particularly on the language policies developed abroad by Brazil, especially in the institutional sphere. For this, I will analyze the problems and challenges faced by the country, in different contexts of its action, as well as discuss initiatives which have been undertaken as well as others in progress. Finally, I will make some considerations about the problems and perspectives related to this particular issue, considering the scenario of promoting languages in the 21st century. From the construction of a new management to Portuguese, based on the cooperation and the development of actions of transnational scope, it is possible to design a future scenario in which the Portuguese assures its place in our century as one of the languages of prominence in the global scope.
