Abstract

In Lesson of Things, the Brazilian poet Carlos Drummond de Andrade seeks new methods of investigation for his poetics by turning his attention to the figuration of objects as a matter of his poetry. The present study, which starts from the formal analysis of one of the book's poems — Ceramics — intends to show that this figuration takes place on historical ground, even when the descriptive scene apparently masks social tensions. Facing a context in which the objectification of the world and the human being is a rule and in which things assume a phantasmagoric independence, the alienation and reification of the subject become indelible marks of their experiences. As a consequence, both individual and collective memories constitute themselves of marked experiences of negativity.
