Abstract

In this paper we discuss the presence of the clown in Samuel Beckett´s work as an evidence of a scenic poetics. Analyzing examples in his theatre and literature, we perceive how appearance and behavior of his characters resemble and radicalize that of the circus clown, stressing, especially, his grotesque elements. The clown´s tragic aspect is reinforced through the own condition of the actor in the scene.. In Becket´s theather, the actor is put in a risky condition similar to that of the clown throught repetions and the immobility imposed by the rigorous stage directions that he or she must follow.
