Abstract

The Indian Subaltern Studies arose in the early 1980s with the intent to critically re-write the history of the subaltern classes in India. Their main theoretical and political influence was the Italian thinker Antonio Gramsci. Since 1988 we identified a “post-structuralist turn” in the subalternist work, especially with the work of Michel Foucault. In this article we seek to highlight the influence of poststructuralist thought in the subalternist project and resume the conflict between this theoretical current and Marxist ideas, especially concerning the theories on modes of power and domination.
