Abstract

The objective of the article is to interpret O Alienista, by Machado de Assis, in relation to certain theoretical postulates of the positivist Sociology by Auguste Comte. Examining some important subjects for the positivism, which had received, in Brazil, the designation of hygienist policy, it’s intended to show how Machadian narrator’s irony enunciates the “terror” of the positivism and denounces logically the scientific fragility of psychiatry of the time. Finally, we intend to highlight the critical potency and present of this literary creation regarding the presumed scientific positivity of the contemporary psychiatry.
