Abstract

The aim of this article is to investigate the establishment of a new capitalist spirit of neoliberal nature in the Argentinian and Brazilian enterprises. The principal aspect of this empiric investigation is to verify whether Argentinian and Brazilian executives act based on the principle of shareholder value creation, where enterprise capitalization – through financial market – turns into a common activity to maximize enterprise profit. This investigation is based on Max Weber’s heuristic research program related to the development of modern capitalism. It focuses on the reproduction mechanisms of the capitalist spirit but it also contains theoretical references from Alfred Schutz’ sociology of knowledge. For this research, data related to the life trajectory of 224 CEOs were collected and 52 interviews with Presidents and Executive Directors of the 100 biggest enterprises were conducted in both countries. The study of the Argentinian and Brazilian industrial executives action orientation was realized through the qualitative method of collective interpretative pattern analysis
