Abstract

Since its popularization in the Sixties, Brazilian soap operas have aimed to produce a certain representation of the country and its people. However, in spite of the racial plurality in Brazilian population, the cast of those soap operas lacks racial diversity. This article presents the results of a research that aimed to measure the underrepresentation of black and brown people in the most important TV channel in Brazil: Rede Globo. Our goal was not only to measure this sub-representation, but to understand this lack of representativeness and the partial image of the Brazilian nation that is behind it. Although our data shows a soft change in this trend, it also shows that Brazilian soap operas casts are still mostly white.
