The sports initiation of male artistic gymnastics athletes of the Brazilian National Team

The present article aims to analyze aspects of the sports initiation of Brazilian male artistic gymnastics (MAG) athletes who competed in World Championships and Olympic Games between the years 2013-2021. To achieve this, semi-structured interviews were conducted with five Brazilian athletes. Thematic Oral History was employed for the apprehension of oral sources, and the written document was categorized into other sports experiences; age of initiation in the sport; place of birth; referral; infrastructure. The results highlighted the role of physical education professionals in introducing the sport, arousing interest, and identifying and referring sports talents. The age of initiation in the sport did not prove relevant in all analyzed trajectories. The athletes are from the Southeast region. The training locations were clubs/sports associations that provided basic MAG equipment. Selections were made through observation by coaches, based on their own experience. It is concluded that there is a need to value coaches, as well as to maintain training structures in Brazilian regions that traditionally produce athletes.
