Brazil was the destination of a major part of Azorean emigration from the second half of the 18th century until the second half of the 19th. Coming from various backgrounds, some of these individuals were intellectuals that contributed to the musical activity in Rio de Janeiro. Departing from several examples, notably the cases of Raphael Coelho Machado and Theotonio Borges Diniz, this study examines their relations with Angra do Heroísmo. The transfers of Brazilian music heritage, mostly sacred music, to Angra do Heroísmo is a synonym of the links established with the local clergy, fi gures of high infl uence in Terceira Island social circles of the 19th century.
