Reading of the short story Missa do Galo, based on the conceptual framework of Wolfgang Iser’s theory of aesthetic effect (1978). Possible articulation of Iser’s conceptual framework with notions of Hans Robert Jauss’ reception aesthetics. Description of Machado’s writing according to the idea of a suspensive aesthetic structure, in which the indetermination provokes the reader’s attention to the self-referentiality of the structure. Description of the aesthetic pole as an interaction condition. The development of a phenomenological analysis to register perceptive acts as if they were inaugural. The objective is to illustrate how the phases of the mind of the implied reader are processed in contact with an aesthetic suspensive structure, which is characterized by Iser’s concepts, such as repertoire, strategy, defamiliarization; gap.
