Abstract

This article is a study about the malandro as a Brazilian national symbol at two moments of the mass culture: the turn of the XIX century and the 1920's. Analyzing the malandro according to these two separate contexts, the author intends to demonstrate the different uses and meanings of this type at the construction of a national identity.
