Abstract

The purpose of this article is to break with the historiographical silence that persists in the organized black movement against racism in Brazil, in particular with respect to the first decades of the Republican period. The article offers elements for a pioneer study of a social entity called the Clube Negro de Cultura Social (1932-38), analyzing its two official publications: the magazine Cultura, during the first phase, and the newspaper O Clarim, during the organization's second phase.
