Abstract

The novel of the nationalist writer Manuel Galvez El uno y Ia multitud (1955) is an extremely rich historical source for reconstructing the social and political struggles in Argentina during the period which precedes the arrival of Perón in the political scene. The analysis of this book offers the possibility to discuss the issue of a"collective national identity" which enabled the birth of a new type of political sensibility. The relationship between Hterature and history is the basis of this analysis on"sentiment and national identity" in Argentina during the 1940s.
