Abstract

Mário de Andrade consecrated his criticism about the composition of the painting on the ceiling of the Church of Carmo, Itu. He estimated it as unusual, popular and Brazilian. In his opinion, Padre Jesuíno do Monte Carmelo innovated because he ignored the academic rules. My propose is to reverse this point of view: on the contrary, it may be argued that the painting on the ceiling of the Church of Carmo in Itu represented a general tendency towards simplification and introduction of festoons. This tendency was vehiculated by religious and laic portuguese publications.
