Abstract

Brazil has not always been the name of the country where we live. For nearly two centuries the land was known both as Brazil and as The Land of the Holy Cross. Both were part of Portuguese colonization in the New World, and for this reason both had their followers and supporters. It was not until the mid-eighteenth century that the name Brazil won out. The reasons for this ambivalence are shown in this article, where we also try to understand the meaning of this amazing vacillation.
