Abstract

The colonization of Guarapuava hinterland was a slow moviment and it was based mainly on cattle raising and Erva-mate (Yerba maté) production. The development of animals criation and commerce activities linked to the Erva-mate production, transformed Guarapuava in a commercial conexion between Brazil's Centro-Sul region and Prata Republics. Thus I argue that Guarapuava became a place of conflict that oposed new-arrivals - migrants and european immigrants - to hinterland original inhabitants: the indians. The purpose of this paper is to demonstrate how and why making the ocupation in the latter brazilian south frontier, between 1808 and 1821.
