Abstract

The project of expansion cherished by the Portuguese king d. Manuel (r. 1495-1521) was that of a Crusade against the Mamluk Empire, by the Red sea route, which would enable him to recover Jerusalem. Brazil only could act therein as a place of call in the way to the Indies. Albeit there are many signs that the existence of emerged lands in that zone was more or less known ca. 1492, and that the diversion of the fleet of Pedro Álvares Cabral thereto, the latter cannot be ascribed to secret instructions of d. Manuel, but rather to manuvres of the court, which was mainly against the plans of crusade of the sovereign.
