Abstract

This text analyses two different ways of entering the Amazonian hinterland during the colonial period, the ransoming and the war expeditions. We assume that thesetroops constituted, from their very beginning, a moment when exchanges and conflictspeculiar to the Amazon region took place. Moreover, these journeys became not onlyimportant as sources of Indian labor, essential in the region, but also an instrumentfor the consolidation of Portuguese dominion in the region.
