Abstract

The article examines the practice of the manumission among the pardos of Vila Rica (1755-1831). The objective is to apprehend what took them, few slaves’ owners, to practice the manumission in their testamentary dispositions. Looking for the dynamics of the manumission in the relationship gentleman-slave, we reconciled an analysis in the ways of freeing slaves and of the group of having freed with an exam of the proprietors’ condition.
