Abstract

This study aims to understand how João de Minas appropriate stories about under grounds of São Paulo, common stories in town until half 20th century, to plot a crime novel. First, we show some versions of that story. After, we show how João de Minas published crime fiction in illustrated magazines. Then, we analyse the narrative, plot and themes of novel Nos misteriosos subterrâneos de São Paulo (In São Paulo's mysterious undergrounds). Using a urban legend, the writer structures a crime novel that subvert some classical rules of genre when he points out people problems and political dilemmas of São Paulo thirties
