Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to analyze the enforcement of the Royal Edict of March 12th 1798 in he Indian villages and territories of Espírito Santo, and therefore the Indian´s self-government which, according to a legal standpoint, took place in Brazil between 1798 and 1845. The self-governing system enforced to Indian population aimed firstly to warrant the State interests, but it has also made possible the development of asymmetric relations of reciprocity between them and the province governments.
