Theatrical images in the painting of Greek vases.

Abstract

The analysis of painting on ceramics, with images taken from the Greek theater, allows a partial reconstruction of the spectator’s view in that society. The divergence between the images of tragedies and those of comedies is obvious, such as it happens in their written versions. Specially attractive are the grotesque and deformed figures, concordant with the irreverence and lack of inhibition characteristic of the comical genre. It is also of interest the figures of male actors playing feminine roles.
