Roman Egypt: between tradition, memory, and renewal

Roman Egypt was a multicultural society, where Egyptian culture coexisted with other cultural traditions, notably Greek and Roman, from which it was influenced to a greater or lesser extent, but also made important contributions. In this context of substantial cultural contact, we can observe the Egyptian society of the period both from the point of view of maintaining a tradition and a memory, as well as the changes suffered in the course of time, between the 1st and 4th centuries AD. In order to observe the changes and permanences of the Egyptian tradition in the period, we propose to consider elements of material culture of burial contexts, especially the mummy portraits, to discuss how the question of style and form has been considered in academic literature and how this aspect of material culture may serve as a basis for the analysis of the historical problem concerning funerary beliefs and customs and their transformation and adaptation in the Christian Era.
