Resumen

During the 1960’s, the Marajo project recorded and studied nineteen new archaeological sites on the southeastern portion of Marajo Island, aiming to increase, by employing the PRONAPABA’s methodology, the data that supported the basis for the Tropical Forest Phases model proposed by Meggers and Evans (1957). Nevertheless, not all the results conformed to the researches’ expectations and as a result, some important data was never published. In this article, I compare the published material to the field and laboratory reports (site files and records of artifacts at the Museu Paraense Emilio Goeldi), discussing the validity of the model used for the definition of ceramic cultures on Marajo Island.
