Abstract

As part of the ongoing research developed by the “Paranapanema Project” extensive surveys were carried out along this river in 1994. The archaeological reconnaissance of this area is particularly interesting since the remainning parts of the middle valley are now underwater due to the construction of three hidroeletric dams, where however no systematic rescue research has been made. The area studied is thence the only non-flooded recognition portion of the middle Paranapanema where it is still possible to recognize the pre-colonial riverine occupation patterns, with all the implications to the understanding of the indigenous settlements developed in the region.
