Abstract

This article aims to gather and interpret information so we can understand better Antonio Candido's shift from Sociology to Literature in 1958. Two decisive events contributed to that change: the São Paulo State government plan to expand higher education offer to the countryside, and especially the establishment of the School of Philosophy, Sciences and Letters of Assis, conceived by Antônio Soares Amora and Antonio Candido to be a revolutionary institution in language and literature teaching in Brazil.
