The São Paulo Research Foundation (Fapesp) was established by law in October, 1960 and opened in May, 1962 during the term of office of Governor Carvalho Pinto. Its main assignment is to foster, support and defend the science policy of São Paulo State developed in the diverse fields of knowledge production within São Paulo territory. Born from the academic concern of engineers, physicians and biologists devoted to researching, Fapesp developed quickly and efficiently; and shortly after its foundation it included Letters in its repertoire, of which Social Sciences and History had already been part. This article tells how such inclusion took place thanks to the efforts of Antonio Candido from FFCL-USP.
