Abstract

Brazil is at a turning point: after being one of the countries with higher economic growth and social mobility throughout the 20th century, its development has stagnated. The favorable economic dynamics helped in the general progress of the population’s living conditions and favored, in particular, the reduction of gender inequalities in the country. Brazilian women have conquered significant victories since the Proclamation of the Republic, especially after World War II; however, the current economic recession, which is unfolding in social and political crisis, has halted the process of greater equality between men and women, already presenting setbacks in the pursuit of gender equity in the field of greater autonomy in general, but especially in relation to women’s insertion in the labor market and in the area of sexual and reproductive rights.
