Abstract

Popular music is often analyzed from national “musical genres.” We just need to recollect the most traditional musical genres of the American continent, such as samba, jazz, rumba, bolero and tango, so that our cultural memory relates them to their countries of “origin”: Brazil, the United States, Cuba, Mexico, and Argentina, respectively. The historiography of music has been problematizing this approach based on the national panorama for some time. In this line, we propose a mapping focused on the musical exchange between Europe, Americas, and Africa.
