Abstract

This article discusses the relationship between soccer and otherness as regards the idea of "exotic team", which is historically associated with African and Muslim teams, and also with Brazilian squads. This categorization has acquired a more clearly defined meaning as it has been linked to body technique, game tactics and ethnic and racial makeup of teams. From such perspective, it indicates both aesthetic extravagance and tactical disorganization; aspects associated with a cultural identity seen as "alien" to the European standard scientific soccer.
