Abstract

The purpose of the research was to establish the effect of a series of factors on first grade students achievement. Among factors considered, one can list ability level, characteristics of the teacher such as teaching experience, attitudes with respect to student problems and performance in the classroom, as well as change of teachers during the school year. Results showed that achievement has a strong positive relation with ability level, a negative relation with change of teachers during the year and practically no relation the other variables considered.
