Abstract

In a previous article, I made some rapid comments on Laerte Ramos de Carvalhos, the first director of FEUSP, development and philosophical and historical writings. Here, having as main objective the study of his articles published in newspapers, I trie to systematize his ideas on the meaning of education, grouped into three topics: 1) education as directly linked to democracy; 2) public school accessible to all as one of the first obligations and a pre-condition to the existence of a democratic State; 3) University has the highest expression of the culture and life of a country, in its integrating spirit, in its effective autonomy, and in this link with surrounding reality. Laerte Ramos de Carvalhos performance, as an administrator and as an educator - In the University of Brasilia, in the São Paulo State Board of Education, in the Faculty of Education of USP and in the Prof. Queiroz Filho Regional Center of Educational Research - will be topic of the next and last article of this serie.
