Considering that tourism researches have deepened on social issues and, with this, search for tools that bring the researcher closer to the studied realities, this article aimed to present a discussion about the suitability of photoethnography as a useful methodological resource for the development of academic research in the area of Tourism and Hospitality, especially when there is an emphasis on socio-cultural manifestations. This objective was achieved through a theoretical essay combined with empirical research using the methodology to prove its suitability. The empirical stage was carried out with a fieldwork in Chapada do Norte, a remnant quilombo community in the Jequitinhonha Valley, registering the main traditional festival of the city “Festa de Nossa Senhora do Rosário dos Homens Pretos”. We used the stages of the photoetnographic technique proposed by the anthropologist Achutti and, from 1300 own photographic records, we elaborated a photoetnographic narrative composed of 31 images. Finally, combining the theoretical and empirical steps, we highlight the potentials, advantages and limitations of the photoetnographic technique. We conclude that the methodology proves to be effective and may have several applications for studies in Tourism and Hospitality, especially regarding socio-cultural manifestations. However, it is limited by the fact that it does not delve into natural phenomena and spaces.
