Despite being rather unknown in Brazil Lermontov is considered in Russia, as well as worldwide, as one of the most important authors in 19th century Russian literature, having directly influenced in spite of a extremely short life writers as important as Dostoyevsky, Tolstoy and Mayakovsky. The poem here presented in a poetic translation and in its very first appearance in Portuguese introduces several themes and topics which were essential to Lermontov's works, e.g. the Caucasus landscape, the romanticist nostalgia and a moral condemnation of his own time. The result is a unique criticism of the romanticist poet elaborated in Romanticism's own terms.
